Few places in the country offer the variety and quality of outdoor opportunities found in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Here, the seasons, habitat, and coastal migration patterns line up to create an authentic cast and blast experience. Anglers and hunters can spend part of the day chasing tailing redfish or sight fishing shallow flats, then switch gears to pursue marsh hens or coastal ducks.

Charleston, Kiawah Island, Folly Beach, and Mt Pleasant all sit at the center of a rich estuarine ecosystem that supports healthy populations of fish and birds. A cast and blast trip is aunique way to experience the full rhythm of the Lowcountry — one part fishing, one part hunting, and all tied to the rise and fall of the tide.

Redfishing In The SC Lowcountry

Redfish are the perfect complement to marsh hen and coastal duck hunts in the fall and winter. As the weather cools, redfish group into larger schools and feed aggressively, making this one of the most reliable and visually exciting times of year to target them.

Redfish can be caught using fly rods, light tackle, or simple bait rigs depending on conditions and angler preference. Sight fishing is often excellent on clear winter tides, with large schools cruising and feeding in shallow water. On other days, covering productive creeks and edges keeps rods bent and the action steady.

The fall and winter redfish bite lines up perfectly with the Lowcountry’s hunting seasons, creating a natural combination of fishing and wingshooting in the same day.

Marsh Hen Hunting In Charleston, SC

Marsh hens (also known as rails) are a classic Lowcountry bird that spends their lives connected to the tides. On big fall flood tides, marsh hens move into the high grass where they can be flushed from small creeks and flooded spartina. Hunters use small boats or pole skiffs to push through the grass, providing close range shooting.

Marsh hen hunting is fun, accessible, and perfectly suited for new hunters, families, or anyone who enjoys a traditional coastal experience. The birds hold tight, flush close, and offer natural shooting opportunities over flooded grass. When the tide is right, the action can be steady.

Coastal Duck Hunting In The South Carolina Lowcountry

Coastal duck hunting around Charleston is unique. Instead of large inland reservoirs or agricultural fields, ducks here use tidal creeks, marsh ponds, and open water stretches as they move along the Atlantic Flyway. Species can include teal, gadwall, wigeon, black ducks, buffleheads, and scaup depending on the weather and migration patterns.

Morning hunts often take place out of small blinds or natural cover in creeks and backwaters. The scenery alone: spartina grass, winding tides, and the sunrise over the marsh is worth the trip. Successful hunts are built around understanding tide timing, wind direction, and how ducks move through the Lowcountry’s maze of marsh and creeks.

Coastal duck hunts pair naturally with redfishing or marsh hen hunts, creating a full day that showcases the best of the region.
